'Call of Duty: Warzone' Is Shutting Down on Past-Gen Consoles on October 23

Longtime "Call of Duty" players sticking with older hardware are about to lose access to one of the franchise's most popular experiences.

Activision has laid out exactly how the shutdown will unfold, and the timeline lines up directly with the next big release in the series.

'Call of Duty: Warzone' to Shut Down on Past-Gen Consoles

Activision confirmed that "Call of Duty: Warzone" will stop working entirely on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One once Season 1 of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" launches. The shutdown follows a staged rollout that began back in June, when Warzone was pulled from digital storefronts on both consoles, preventing new players from downloading the game at all.

On June 25, the in-game store followed, cutting off the ability to purchase Call of Duty Points or any new content on those platforms.

Existing players were still able to keep playing and progressing through free Battle Pass tiers during this stretch, but that window closes for good once the new season begins.

Since "Modern Warfare 4" is set to launch on October 23, Activision has said Season 1 content will follow shortly after, marking the point where Warzone goes fully offline on last-generation hardware.

Which Platforms Are Affected by This?

The shutdown specifically targets PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, including all variants within those console families. Every other platform currently supporting "Call of Duty: Warzone" remains unaffected by this change.

According to GameRant, Activision has framed the decision as a direct consequence of "Modern Warfare 4" becoming the first mainline entry in the series built exclusively for current-generation hardware. This is because "Warzone" shares its underlying technology and yearly theming with whichever premium title releases that year.

This marks a real end-of-support moment for the PS4 and Xbox One generation, and "Call of Duty" is only one of the earliest major franchises to draw that line so clearly. Both consoles launched back in 2013, giving them an unusually long run compared to past generations, but that stretch appears to be reaching its natural limit now.

As newer titles continue leaning on more demanding hardware to support bigger maps, denser player counts, and more advanced visual features, other long-running franchises are widely expected to follow a similar path in the coming years.

This will lead to the gradually phasing out of support for hardware that can no longer keep pace with where game development is heading.

What Does This Mean For the Game?

Once the shutdown takes effect, "Call of Duty: Warzone" will simply be unavailable on PS4 and Xbox One, with no frozen or legacy version left running for players who want to stay on those consoles. Anyone wanting to keep playing will need to move over to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, all of which will continue receiving full support alongside "Modern Warfare 4" going forward.

Activision has also confirmed that player progression, along with any content purchased using Call of Duty Points, will carry over automatically through a linked Activision account once players make that switch.

For those without access to a current-generation console, PC remains available as another option for continuing to play. That path could matter for some, especially with hardware prices climbing across consoles and PC components alike in recent months, making the move away from older systems a bigger financial decision than it might have been in past years.
