Call of Duty's live-action adaptation is coming out in theaters on June 30, 2028, as confirmed today at CinemaCon. Directed by Pete Berg and written by Taylor Sheridan of Sicario fame, the film is finally going to bring one of the biggest franchises to the silver screen.
As per the Hollywood Reporter, Call of Duty's film adaptation is going to start screening in mid-2028, June 30 to be exact. This was confirmed at CoD's CinemaCon panel today, with Activision president Rob Kostich saying its partnership with Paramount led to the movie's production. "I told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it's right. In David Ellison (Paramount chief), we found that partnership," Kostich said.
Pete Berg and Taylor Sheridan, who is known for his incredible work in TV and films, especially action ones, are co-writing the script, while Berg is also directing. Sheridan wrote some of the best military action movies I've ever seen, including Sicario and its sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The first one is heralded as the better, but both movies have a very deep, human outlook on conflicts and the darker sides of the world, which is no doubt going to help the Call of Duty movie become more than a mere action flick.
Kostich also said that an authentic and human perspective will be at the core of the movie. "We want to make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuse that with epic scope," he said.
That period of 2028 isn't packed with a lot of films, allowing the Call of Duty adaptation to really grip the theatrical scene. However, the Hello Kitty movie is coming out a few weeks after CoD, which could turn into another case of Barbenheimer—or as we call it: Call of Kitty. It could be a fun month or so for moviegoers and casuals alike, mimicking the incredible theatrical experience we all had when Barbie and Oppenheimer were screened back-to-back.
It's still a long way off, however, so there's a lot that could change in the meantime. But as things stand, I have a feeling it'll be a fun time in cinemas, especially considering the contrast between Sheridan's grim writing and the sunshine and rainbow vibes of Hello Kitty.
