Activision has released full details on the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" Open Beta, giving players a comprehensive look at what to expect once the free weekend goes live.

"Call of Duty's" official X account is now teasing the arrival of the open beta, with "Modern Warfare 4's" early experience being free for all players and not requiring a preorder or beta code to access.
It includes a wide range of content across campaign, multiplayer, and "Call of Duty: Warzone," giving players their most complete look yet at what Infinity Ward has built for this entry. Players can preload the beta ahead of time on every supported platform, and progression from the earlier access weekend carries over, letting returning players continue leveling up rather than starting from scratch.
Activision and Infinity Ward have detailed all of the upcoming experiences in their extensive blog post, sharing what to expect in the open beta.
A new Mobility Course training facility is also included, built specifically to teach the expanded movement and combat systems introduced in this entry. Players can work through guided tutorials before testing their skills in timed courses, with the option to return throughout the beta to sharpen their movement, weapon handling, and marksmanship ahead of jumping into full matches.

'Modern Warfare 4' Open Beta Campaign Mission
For the first time in "Call of Duty" beta history, players will be able to complete a full campaign mission before the game even launches.
The mission, titled "Entrenched," puts players alongside friendly infantry and armored vehicles in a large-scale assault meant to stop a strategically important nuclear power station from falling into enemy hands. Campaign Early Access begins October 16 for digital preorders, ahead of the full game release on October 23.
'MW4' Multiplayer Modes, Operator/Class Creation
The Open Beta includes seven Core 6v6 multiplayer modes, covering Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, and Search and Destroy alongside two new additions, Inflation and Hijack. Inflation rewards players for stacking up eliminations while becoming an increasingly valuable target, while Hijack tasks players with planting a Data Spike at an enemy Comm Station as defenders try to disarm it.
Players also get access to Kill Block, a reworked take on Gunfight built around a combat space that reconfigures every two rounds, available in both classic 3v3 and a new 10v10 variant.
Create a Class has been streamlined into a single menu, letting players build up to 12 custom loadouts, each with its own dedicated operator, weapons, equipment, perks, field upgrade, and killstreaks.
Operators are now assigned per loadout rather than shared across the whole account, giving each setup its own distinct identity. Players progress through XP earned in multiplayer matches, climbing from Level 1 to 30 during the Open Beta and unlocking new weapons, equipment, perks, and eight exclusive beta rewards along the way, including the "Dread Tiger" operator skin for Reece and a weapon blueprint for the Han 86 assault rifle.
All beta rewards earned carry over into the full game at launch.
When Is the 'MW4' Open Beta Going Live?
The "Modern Warfare 4" Open Beta runs from August 28 at 10 AM PT through September 1 at 10 AM PT. Preloading opened earlier on August 26 across all supported platforms.
- On Xbox Series X/S and Xbox on PC, players can search for the beta directly in the Xbox Store and select Install ahead of launch.
- PlayStation 5 owners can preload through the PlayStation Store the same way.
- PC players on Steam can preload by visiting the game's store page and selecting Play Now, while Battle.net users can open the app, select the game, and choose Install.
- Nintendo Switch 2 owners can preload through the Nintendo eShop by searching for the beta directly, with preorders for the full game also opening the same day.
