Call for new crossing at 'dangerous' spot near McDonald's and Aldi in Edwalton

There are calls for a new crossing on a "dangerous" road outside a new McDonald's and Aldi store. A peititon has been set up asking Nottinghamshire County Council to add a zebra or pedestrian crossing on Landmere Lane in Edwalton, near the new retail park.

The retail park, which is home to a Greggs, Costa, McDonald's, Aldi and Pet's Corner among other stores, opened for the first time last year near the popular Notcutts Wheatcroft Garden Centre. It has meant more traffic on Landmere Lane with cars "pulling in from three directions" while families try to safely cross the road.

The petition, which has been signed by more than 300 people, states: "The new Edwalton Retail Park has driven increased traffic to the area but also added facilities used by many residents. However, a crucial crossing across Landmere Lane is not protected by lights or a proper pedestrian crossing.

"This means it is a routine occurrence for residents to have to run the gauntlet at this junction while cars pull in from three directions. This is especially dangerous for those with babies in pushchairs and prams, who cannot run across. Many have struggled to cross this busy road safely.

"We, as the residents of the surrounding area, request that the council install a traffic light or zebra crossing across Landmere Lane opposite the retail park, to safely complete the pedestrian route into the area."

Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, who represents Gamston North for the Conservatives on Rushcliffe Borough Council and West Bridgford South on the county council, said: "I helped to set up the petition and the council have now agreed to undergo a survey of the area, a survey was done years ago before the development which has obviously changed thngs quite a lot. I live round the corner and was contacted by residents who believed there wasn't a safe place to cross.

"We have to make sure people feel safe crossing the road, I suggested a petition as it was clearly something a lot of people supported."

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We await the petition about installing a crossing on Landmere Lane in Edwalton.

“Requests for new highways measures including requesting a new crossing can be made through our website, and once submitted, a member of our team will be in touch to discuss this in more detail. Once received, this petition will be considered by the Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment.”

It was reported in March last year that a new camera was to be installed to monitor traffic at the retail park amid drive-through tailbacks under Covid restrictions at the time. The area has seen huge development in recent years with land east and west of Melton Road allocated in Rushcliffe Borough Council's local plan for around 1,500 homes as well as a community centre and other communal facilities.

Hundreds of homes have been built despite wildlife campaigners have fought against plans to build homes near Sharphill Woods, saying other locations should be considered first. Work is also taking place on a new Porsche showroom. You can visit the county council's website by clicking here - anyone who wants to sign the petition can do so here.
