California's New Affordability Enforcement Teams Homeowners and Renters Should Watch
California’s new Affordability Response Team will investigate alleged unlawful practices that drive up costs, with housing, rent, insurance, financial services, and consumer scams among its key areas of focus – Shutterstock

California just created a new enforcement team aimed at one of the most painful parts of modern life: the bill that somehow keeps getting bigger even when the paycheck does not. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the California Department of Justice’s Affordability Response Team on June 8, 2026, with a mission that reaches directly into the financial pressure facing homeowners, renters, and consumers.

The team will investigate unlawful practices that raise costs, including alleged misconduct involving landlords, corporations, scammers, lenders, and other businesses. That does not mean every rent increase, insurance premium, grocery bill, or mortgage payment suddenly falls under a state investigation. It does mean California wants a more coordinated way to identify conduct that crosses the line from expensive to potentially illegal.
