California shocker: McDonald’s worker left with second-degree burns on face, neck, arm, back after hot oil attack

A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee is fighting for recovery after allegedly being attacked by a co-worker who threw scalding hot oil at him inside a restaurant in Yuba City, California. The incident, which police say happened on May 30, has left the victim with severe burns and sparked a felony investigation, reports The New York Post.

What Happened: Sudden Workplace Attack With Hot Oil

Jacob Smith, 20, was on duty at McDonald’s when the alleged attacker, co-worker Jalani Bluett, 23, reportedly threw hot oil on him without warning.

Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, described the horrifying moment, saying: “He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he just turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,”

The attack left Smith with second-degree burns across his face, neck, arm, and back. He has remained in the ICU for more than a week, undergoing intensive treatment.

Who Are the People Involved?

The victim, Jacob Smith, is a 20-year-old McDonald’s worker who is also engaged to be married. His family says he is still in critical condition and struggling with extreme pain.

The accused, Jalani Bluett, 23, was later arrested after initially being reported as a missing person. Authorities said he was “considered at risk due to a diagnosis and vulnerabilities” before being taken into custody.

He is currently being held at Sutter County jail without bail and faces multiple felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury.

Where and When Did It Happen?

The attack took place on May 30 at a McDonald’s outlet in Yuba City, California. According to reports, Bluett fled the scene immediately after the assault, triggering a police search before he was eventually located and arrested.

Why Did It Happen? Motive Still Unknown

Investigators have not confirmed any clear motive behind the attack. Police say the case is still under active investigation.

Smith himself reportedly has no idea why he was targeted. His mother shared the emotional toll this uncertainty has taken on the family, saying: “As his mother, it broke my heart when he looked at me and said, ‘Why would he do this to me?"

How Severe Are the Injuries?

Doctors say Smith has suffered life-threatening burns and requires specialized ICU care. His condition remains serious, and pain management has been extremely difficult.

Amber Smith explained the severity of his suffering, saying: “The pain he’s experiencing is so excruciating that they can’t give him a level of pain medicine outside of the ICU."

Medical teams are reportedly working to reduce burn severity and avoid extensive skin graft surgeries where possible.

Family Demands Justice as Recovery Continues

As Jacob continues treatment, his family is seeking accountability and financial support for medical costs and recovery expenses.

Amber Smith expressed her demand for justice, saying: “I want justice to be served. I want him to serve the time he needs to serve for what he’s done to my son,”

At the same time, she added a message reflecting emotional conflict over the accused: “I mean, I don’t wish bad things towards him. I just want him to understand that what he did — really understand what he did — and the pain that he caused to my son is excruciating.”

A fundraiser has been set up to help the family, as Jacob remains unable to work during recovery.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities continue to investigate what led to the violent workplace incident. No additional details about the motive have been released so far, and the case remains open as prosecutors prepare for legal proceedings.
