Three Californians have died of West Nile virus this year, the first deaths the state has recorded in the 2026 season, and the human case count has climbed to 30 across 14 counties.
The California Department of Public Health surveillance page reports the fatalities in Butte, Glenn, and Kings counties, one in each. Twelve new human cases were added in a single week, the largest weekly jump of the season so far, from Butte, Fresno, Kings, Orange, and Yolo counties.
