California Couple Shot And Killed In Mexico

Crime Scene Do not cross

A tragic incident unfolded in Mexico as a California couple, Rafael and Gloria Cardona, were fatally shot while visiting family in Angamacutiro, Michoacan state. The couple's vehicle was targeted by armed gunmen, resulting in Gloria's immediate death at the scene and Rafael passing away shortly after in the hospital.

Fortunately, their three children, two of whom are minors, were not present during the attack and are currently under the care of extended family members in Angamacutiro. The US State Department is providing support to the couple's adult daughter during this difficult time.

It was revealed that Rafael Cardona's brother-in-law, Hermes Arnulfo Pacheco Bribiesca, a Mexican government official in Amangcutiro, was connected to the incident as the couple was driving his van at the time of the shooting. The motive behind the attack remains unconfirmed by Mexican authorities.

Michoacan, the state where the tragedy occurred, has a history of gang violence dating back to the 1980s, with a current homicide rate that exceeds the national average in Mexico. The region is known for being a major producer of avocados, a market plagued by violent groups and corruption within public authorities.

Gangs like the Zetas and Familia Michoacana have established a presence in Michoacan, engaging in drug production and trafficking activities that often target local farmers. The state's association with drug-related crimes has been highlighted in various reports, shedding light on the challenges faced by the community.

As the investigation into the couple's tragic deaths continues, a mass will be held in Angamacutiro to honor their memory. The municipality has decided to cancel all celebrations for the remainder of the month as a mark of respect for the victims.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing security issues in Mexico, where a significant number of crimes, including disappearances, remain unsolved. The country's struggle with crime and violence underscores the need for continued efforts to address these challenges and ensure the safety of its citizens.
