Caledonian Sleeper announces iconic route photo contest winner

CALEDONIAN Sleeper has announced the winners of its photography competition aimed at celebrating the country’s most scenic locations on the overnight train’s iconic route.

The competition called on participants from across the UK to share images of their favourite view from their journey or specific locations and activities that Caledonian Sleeper carried them to.

Duncan McEvoy from York secured first place with his incredible image of the Caledonian Sleeper travelling over the South Esk Viaduct in Montrose under a pink sky and Harvest Full Moon.

McEvoy captured the photograph at 06:43 on the morning of Wednesday, September 25, as the train crossed over the viaduct at the neck of Montrose Basin.

He won a return journey in an en-suite Club Room onboard the Caledonian Sleeper with dinner, plus a £500 Amazon voucher to use on photography equipment. His photograph will also be displayed in the Euston station guest lounge, and he will receive a one-to-one virtual session with renowned photographer and guest judge Tony Marsh.

The runner-up prize went to Gordon Sellar from Bishopbriggs with a beautiful driver’s eye shot of Rannoch Moor. Sellar is a driver with West Coast Railways and was on a line patrol locomotive running in front of the Fort William portion of the Caledonian Sleeper when he was able to stop to take the photograph of Rannoch Moor. Sellar was awarded a £250 Amazon voucher for his shot.

In joint third place was Tim Moran from Northwich, Cheshire and Steve Slack from Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Mr Moran captured the first rays of sunlight rising over the River Weaver, while Mr Slack photographed a sunrise over the Forth Bridge. Both received a £100 Amazon voucher for their efforts.

Kathryn Darbandi, Managing Director of Caledonian Sleeper, said: “It has been incredibly difficult to select a winner from the large number of amazing submissions that we received for the competition. In fact, we ended up with four winners instead of just three as the calibre was so high!

“I’d like to express my appreciation to everyone who submitted a photograph into the competition and to our team of judges who had the difficult task of selecting our winners. There is such a large pool of talented photographers all over the country, so to reach one of our top spots is such a huge achievement. The images captured showcase just some of the magnificent scenery our country has to offer, all of which can be experienced while travelling on the Caledonian Sleeper.”
