Caleb Williams Confidently Addresses Reaction to Showing Emotions After Washington Loss

Watching USC quarterback Caleb Williams go into the stands to sob in his mother’s arms following the Trojans’ 52–42 loss to Washington was a jarring image for many. Football is perceived as a game of toughness and brutality. If any emotion is shown, it’s typically for celebration or frustration.

After video clips made their way across TV and social media, the reaction to Williams’s behavior was polarizing. Some criticized the display of emotion, saying it was a sign of weakness in someone expected to be a leader. Others welcomed the reaction, feeling it showed how much the Heisman Trophy winner cared about winning and how crushing it was to lose.

Asked about his reaction after the Washington loss, Williams said it’s important to be himself.

“I’ve been an advocate for mental health, trying to show your emotions and express yourself, things like that,” Williams said to the Orange County Register’s Luca Evans. “It’s something I’ve been doing since I was young and now, being on the national level, being able to try and share that awareness with the public.”

“Me doing just what I did on Saturday, even though it was far from what I was trying to do, it showed and spread that kind of awareness,” Williams continued. “It just shows truth in what I speak. Being able to share that, being authentic is important.”

As the quarterback for a team expected to contend for a national championship, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, and likely No. 1 selection in next year’s NFL draft, Williams’s actions are under heavy scrutiny.

However, he disregards how he’s perceived by fans and media. Williams cares more about being genuine and consistent with his message about mental health, which can help people.
