Cairngorms wildfire ‘hotspots’ persist as public urged to stay away

  • An ongoing wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park still has "substantial hotspots", with over 100 firefighters having been mobilised to tackle the blaze.
  • The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed crews will remain on scene over the weekend and into next week to manage remaining pockets of fire and prevent reignition.
  • The fire, which started near Glenmore last Wednesday, covered an area of about six square kilometres of heather and small trees at its height.
  • The public is being urged to stay away from affected areas as the region “remains unsafe” with ongoing firefighting operations and helicopter water-bombing, according to SFRS.
  • Despite road closures and police cordons, SFRS said emergency services are still receiving reports of people attempting to enter the affected area.
