The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) released its annual civil rights report, revealing a significant increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents in 2023. Last year, CAIR received 8,061 complaints, marking the highest number in the 28 years that CAIR has been tracking hate incidents.
The report highlighted that the surge in complaints was largely attributed to the Israel-Hamas war that began in October 2023. Over 44% of the total complaints were reported in the last three months of the year.
Among the top categories of complaints were immigration and asylum cases, employment discrimination, and discrimination in education settings. The report also noted instances of discrimination by financial institutions, Islamophobic social media posts by court-appointed attorneys, and law enforcement profiling based on religion or language.
The increase in bias incidents had a significant impact on workplaces and educational institutions, with a notable rise in complaints of employment discrimination, hate crimes, and education discrimination in the final months of 2023.
CAIR emphasized the need for political leaders to denounce Islamophobia and support a ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further attacks on American Muslim communities. The group's report called for public officials and corporate leaders to give equal attention to Palestinian suffering and recommended enhancing anti-doxxing laws to protect individuals expressing support for Palestinians.
The findings underscored the persistent nature of Islamophobia in American society, with CAIR comparing the wave of bias incidents in 2023 to the aftermath of the Trump administration's travel ban on Muslim-majority nations in 2017.
