Butler RB Jyran Mitchell invited to Colts’ local prospect day

Butler running back Jyran Mitchell will be attending the Indianapolis Colts’ local prospect day, according to Aaron Wilson.

Unlike the well-known ‘top 30′ visits, draft prospects invited to a team’s local prospect day will participate in on-field workouts in a try-out-like format.

Every team is able to hold a local prospect day, where teams invite players who have a “local” tie to the area, whether that be attending college or from a nearby hometown that is within the league-defined parameters that meet the distance criteria.

Mitchell measures in at over 5-11 and weighed 196 pounds. He posted a Relative Athletic Score of 7.61 out of 10, which included elite vertical, broad jump, and 3-cone testing, and a 4.56 second 40-yard dash.

Mitchell spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons at Eastern Kentucky, where he played wide receiver. During that span, Mitchell caught 38 of his 55 targets at 11.4 yards per catch with two touchdowns. He spent most of his snaps lined up on the boundary.

With Butler, Mitchell made the move to running back. He carried the ball 199 times in 2023, totaling 1,267 yards at 6.4 yards per rush with 12 scores. Mitchell also remained fairly active in the passing game, with 24 receptions for 209 yards and three scores.

For what it’s worth, he also graded out quite well as a pass-blocker this past season by PFF’s metrics. Mitchell’s versatility is potentially an intriguing element for Shane Steichen and his offense.

Along with working out at the Colts’ local prospect day, Mitchell will also be attending the Chicago Bears’ camp as well because of his proximity.

If the Colts like what they see from Mitchell, they may try to sign him after the draft as an undrafted free agent, giving him the opportunity to compete in training camp and the preseason.
