Busy Burton Joyce road closed for a month due to gas works but it's 'no big deal'

Residents in a Nottinghamshire village have insisted the closure of a busy road through their community is 'no big deal'. Cadent started gas works in Main Street, Burton Joyce, on Monday, July 3, and the work is expected to carry on until August.

Among those affected by the closure is Silvia Brice, 66, of Nottingham Road, who said: "There hasn’t been a build up of traffic or anything like that so I would say everything has gone rather well. A lot of people have cars around here and some people get the buses which have diverted slightly, it will be over before you know it.”

Silvia added: “It’s better to be safe than sorry.” The Nottingham City Transport Lilac Line, 26 and the N26 will divert in both directions through Nottingham Road (A612). Temporary bus stops will be located on Nottingham Road.

Roy Lee, 69, lives in Gedling. Now retired, he said: “It’s no big deal, not really, it could be worse and the work won’t be going on for too long, I’ve seen roads being closed for longer, I think they end in the second week of August.

“I drive into Burton Joyce regularly as I have family here but I don’t think the closures will affect me too badly.”

Another main road in Nottinghamshire, Westleigh Road in Broxtowe, will be closed until July 11 due to water works being carried out by Severn Trent. The Turquoise 77C and 78 will divert in both directions through Helston Drive, Strelley Road, ASDA and Bradfield Drive.

One person who wished to remain anonymous said: “I drive about locally and yes, it will be an inconvenience but it could be worse, the work will be going on for over a month. It has been noisy but I’m sure everyone will be able to deal with it.”
