Business wants to move to site of Lidl supermarket in Wollaton

A veterinary practice could be opening in a Wollaton shopping precinct that houses several other businesses and a Lidl supermarket. The site on Trowell Road was previously a Waitrose supermarket and petrol station, with the national business exchanging contracts with Lidl in 2019.

Planning permission was then granted for the site to be divided up so that as well as the Lidl supermarket, it would house several other business units. Companies operating next to the Lidl store include The Green Room hair salon, the ExtraCare charity shop and The Little Carpet Company.

But a unit at the back of the site has remained vacant and the operator of several East Midlands veterinary practices has now been revealed as a business that could fill it. Planning permission had been granted in 2020 for a gym to fill the vacant unit, but this never materialised.

Ambivet now says it wants to use the space as a veterinary clinic featuring six consultation rooms, two theatres, an X-ray room and several other facilities. The business operates several other clinics in the area, including an existing site in Wollaton on Lambourne Drive.

The new site would see Ambivet relocating from its Lambourne Drive site to Trowell Road, with its clinic in Aspley also being merged with the new clinic. Documents submitted to Nottingham City Council from planning agents say: "We feel that this design will provide the client with space they need to carry out their day-to-day operations as a veterinary practice and ensure Ambivet can continue to provide pet health care services to residents in the Wollaton area.

"The proposal utilises an empty retail unit with minimal external works. As the proposal retains existing features and materials we feel that the works will only fit in with the existing and not detract from the surrounding context."

Work to adapt the unit would include new glazing and doors as well as small external work including the creation of a dog walking area. The application to Nottingham City Council was sent in November, with the authority yet to make a decision on the matter.
