Bus smashes into Ayrshire building with emergency crews dispatched to busy town centre

Emergency services have been dispatched to an Ayrshire town this evening after a bus smashed into a building.

Mercy crews raced to Stewarton cross after the Stagecoach vehicle crashed into a commercial property after crashing with a truck on the corner of Main Street, Rigg Street, Lainshaw Street and Vennel Street at around 5pm.

Multiple ambulances were at the scene along with police and it's understood the bus has been removed from the building, believed to be Deli at One.

The streets surrounding the town's busiest roads have been gridlocked following the crash with motorists reporting that the roads were 'absolute bedlam' prior to the smash.

Eyewitnesses report that passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash and that temporary traffic lights were also in place at the busy intersection.

Despite the emergency services leaving the scene, one eyewitness claims glass is strewn all over the road.

A man who witnessed the crash said: "Three or four folk were sent in ambulance and one or two of them were in a stretcher.

"Emergency services are all gone now. There's glass still all over the road which hasn't been cleared up.

"The bus got moved by Barry Devlin's [recovery] and the lorry was still drivable.

"The road was closed off, so traffic had to be diverted around the town through housing streets which had no police directing traffic.

"Every driver was just thinking about themselves, so the roads all got blocked.

"On the way home, we were stuck in a queue of traffic, and it didn't move so I had to get out and direct them."

Police Scotland and Stagecoach West Scotland have been contacted for comment.
