Bus fares shoot up 8p in the pound to record highs as cost of living crisis bites

Bus fares shot up more than 8p in the pound last year and Labour says rises reached record highs.

That will just add to the cost of living crisis as commuters struggle back to work following the easing of Covid restrictions.

Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh says increases blow a hole in one of Boris Johnson ’s levelling up promises to keep fares down.

She added: “This is more proof you cannot believe a word this PM says.

“Families already facing surging taxes and bills, will now be clobbered with an eye-watering rise in travel costs.”

Her analysis shows the eight highest monthly price rises since records began in 1987 have come since summer 2020.

And it is the lowest-paid being hit hardest because a billion bus journeys were made by those earning £25,000 or less.

Higher earners on £50,000 or more travelled by bus just 141 million times.

Ms Haigh said: “The Tories are so mired in scandal and chaos, they are oblivious to the pain families are facing.”
