The driver behind the wheel of a bus that crashed and killed 14 people was high on the drug crystal meth at the time of the collision, officers say.
Police in East Java, Indonesia, also said the driver did not have a licence when the vehicle carrying 34 people collided with an electronic traffic sign on Monday (May 16).
According to reports, the bus was travelling down the Surabaya-Mojokerto Toll Road at the time of the horror crash.
Videos from the scene showed medical crews dragging the injured and dead from the bus, with the injured then rushed to a hospital in Mojokerto.
There were no brake marks on the road anywhere near to where the wreckage was found.
East Java Police’s preliminary investigation suggested that the high bus driver was the primary cause of the deadly crash, according to Coconuts Jakarta.
The bus, operated by tour company PO Ardiansyah, was travelling back to Mojokerto after excursions to Wonosobo and Yogyakarta.
East Java Police Traffic Director Latief Usman said: "When we looked into the driver, there was indication that he used crystal meth. We are taking a blood sample to confirm the result of a urine test on the driver."
Police are yet to officially press charges but are continuing to gather evidence relating to the collision, which injured a further 19 people.
They also said that the driver was actually a substitute who had apparently got behind the wheel after the bus pulled over at a rest area. He had been driving for 17km (10 miles) before smashing into the traffic sign.
Tour company PO Ardiansyah is also being investigated by the authorities and could face criminal charges regarding neglect if it transpires that its bus drivers were unqualified for the job.
The East Java Police’s preliminary investigation suggested the driver, who has been identified only as AF, as the main cause of the crash.
