For most people, a burp or a swallow is over before they notice it. For one 54-year-old woman, either one could set off a brief spell of vertigo, and the trouble began about six months after she had a tiny prosthesis placed in her right middle ear.
Her case was presented as a poster at the American Academy of Audiology's AAA 2026 convention, held April 22 to 25 in San Antonio. In the presentation abstract, clinicians from the Ear Institute at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai describe tracing her dizziness to a leak in her inner ear and referring her to have the implant taken out. Once surgeons removed the device, her vestibular symptoms went away.
