Burnley tipped to make stunning move for Romelu Lukaku with Chelsea future uncertain

Former Liverpool and England striker Stan Collymore has tipped Burnley to make a shock move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan in the summer of 2021 with the Blues paying a fee thought to be £97.5million. His comeback, however, proved to be as unsuccessful as Lukaku's first spell in west London.

The 30-year-old endured a fractured relationship with Thomas Tuchel, which limited Lukaku's game-time and visibly impacted his on-field performances.

Subsequently, the Belgian completed a loan move back to Italy and the San Siro in June, though injuries have forced him into making just 21 Serie A appearances across the 2022/2023 campaign.

With it being unlikely that Inter will convert the loan spell into a permanent transfer, Lukaku's long-term future is currently uncertain, whilst it has also been suggested by the Telegraph that Mauricio Pochettino will hand Lukaku a Chelsea lifeline if he is appointed manager.

However, Collymore has suggested that Burnley boss Vincent Kompany could lean upon his long-standing relationship with Lukaku to make a shock move for the striker.

“I wonder if Vincent Kompany may ask the Burnley board to have a go,” wrote Collymore, via Caught Offside.

“Kompany knows Lukaku very well, not only from playing against him in the Premier League but also from their time representing Belgium together.

“I’m not saying it will happen, but I could definitely see the newly-promoted club trying something really ambitious.”

Lukaku was quizzed on his future at the end of April but remained coy on the topic, insisting: "Future? I have to be careful [on what he says].

"Pay attention... I want to focus on Inter and give my best for this club game after game. I'm always doing my best for Inter and I like the fans, the relationship is great."
