Burnley and Leeds drop complaint against Everton after Premier League message

Burnley and Leeds United have dropped their complaint to the Premier League over Everton’s spending after receiving assurances that the Blues complied with the rules.

Less than 24 hours after Frank Lampard’s side secured their top flight status for another season with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Crystal Palace in their final home game of the 2021/22 campaign, a report emerged in The Times revealing that Burnley and Leeds United – who were both still fighting for survival (the Yorkshire club would ultimately stay up at the Clarets’ expense) – had written to Everton and the Premier League demanding details of any inquiries held into financial losses sustained by the rules.

Everton had previously dismissed claims they could face a retrospective points deduction and issued the following statement: “We have worked so closely with the Premier League to make sure we are compliant we are comfortable we have complied with the rules. External auditors have told us what we can and cannot claim against the pandemic. If they want to take legal action then they can do so by all means.”

The Daily Mail now states that it is understood that the Premier League have since provided both clubs with further details of how Everton have complied with their guidelines, with much of their spending exempt from the limits due to allowances made for investment in infrastructure and losses attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic and the two clubs’ demand for an independent inquiry into the Premier League’s enforcement of their spending rules has also been dropped.

Both Everton and the Premier League have no comment to make on the matter. The ECHO understands the Blues did not receive any notification from the Premier League of Burnley and Leeds United dropping their complaint although they did not expect to given that these were other clubs’ actions rather than their own.
