Burnham says Chagos Islands resolution with Mauritius is on the cards

  • Andy Burnham has acknowledged that no deal is currently in place over the future of the Chagos Islands but pledged to work towards a resolution.
  • The UK Government's plan to give up sovereignty of the territory while retaining the Diego Garcia military base was paused following opposition from the Trump administration.
  • Speaking ahead of a meeting with US President Donald Trump at UNGA, Mr Burnham stressed that securing the base is vital for UK and allied national security.
  • During a phone call with Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, Mr Burnham committed to working alongside Mauritius and the US to find a way forward.
  • UK and Mauritian foreign ministers are expected to meet at the UN General Assembly to further strengthen bilateral relations.
