Burger King announces drive-thru plans for major Mansfield road

Mansfield could soon be hosting another fast food outlet as developers seek permission for a Burger King they say would create 27 jobs. Three branches of McDonald's, three Subways, two KFCs and two Domino's Pizzas are among the fast food eateries already based in Mansfield.

Burger King already has an established drive-thru and restaurant setting in Mansfield, too, but developers now want to build another one. The new restaurant would be based on land at Southwell Road West, a major route out of Mansfield for those living in the south of the town.

Ransom Wood is a 70-acre woodland space that has been home to a restaurant, children's' nursery and several office buildings since being run as a family business park from 1999. As part of its continued development, planning permission was granted in 2020 for three restaurants and a branch of the Enterprise car rental company to be based on land fronting the Ransom Wood Business Park.

Since then, the three food outlets have been built and are all now operating as restaurants and drive-thrus. The three outlets include Greggs, Costa Coffee and Dunkin' Donuts.

But now developers The Burney Group, which has been behind the development of the food courts at Ransom Wood, now want to build a Burger King as the fourth unit there rather than a branch of Enterprise. A planning application was officially lodged with Mansfield District Council on March 22 seeking permission for the work.

Documents from Dovetail Architects, acting as agents for The Burney Group, state that the new Burger King would create 27 full-time jobs. No access road would need to be built for the new site, with the opportunity to instead extend the road that currently serves the Greggs, Costa and Dunkin' Donuts.

The site would comprise 21 car parking spaces including two disabled bays, four short-stay spaces, four electric vehicle charging bays and two waiting areas for those using the drive-thru. The restaurant element of the site will have enough seating for 36 customers.

The planning documents say: "The proposals would further enhance the food offer at a recognised food location on land fronting Ransom Wood Business Park. The proposed restaurant drive thru would help meet local need and support the needs of the Ransom Wood Business Park."

The food courts at Ransom Wood are based in an industrial area of Mansfield, with the nearby Sherwood Oaks Business Park being the home of car dealerships such as Mazda and Ford. Burger King's other current Mansfield outlet is based at the town's Portland Retail Park.
