The Ospreys insist they remain 'bullish' about their own future and that of Welsh rugby after proposals were put forward that one region had to be axed.
Last night it emerged that an independent report had been commissioned into the 'strategic options' available to Welsh rugby against a backdrop of infrequent success and dwindling interest. One of the recommendations in that report was to lose one region and reduce the number for four to three.
That has seen the previously failed merger between the Scarlets and Ospreys seemingly put back into the conversation but would likely face stiff opposition. The recommendations in the report are now being discussed by the Professional Game Board, which is responsible for the running of the pro game and has representation from each region.

In a statement, the Ospreys responded on Thursday afternoon by saying: "Ospreys have been working closely and collaboratively as a member of the Professional Rugby Board (PRB) to devise a strategy that will ensure sustainability and raise performance across the professional game in Wales.
"As part of this process the PRB has commissioned research from a number of sources, including Oakwell, to ensure the strategy is informed by deep and independent insight. This research will inform, but not dictate the strategy.
"We remain bullish about the future of rugby in Wales and look forward to further success and Ospreys to remain the most successful Welsh region.
"In the meantime, we're looking forward to Sunday’s game against the Dragons as we chase the Welsh Shield and encourage our supporters to show their support at the Swansea.com as they did last weekend."
The winners of the Welsh Shield, namely the region finishing highest in the United Rugby Championship, goes into next season's Champions Cup. The Ospreys and Scarlets are battling it out for that top spot.
