A residential building at the Lanyon Homestead precinct was found entirely on fire in the early hours of Friday morning, police say.
ACT Policing and ACT Fire and Rescue personnel went to the heritage site on Tharwa Drive, Tuggeranong about 3.30am after reports of a structure fire.
"Upon arrival, a standalone residence was well alight," a police spokeswoman said.
Police believe no one was inside the building at the time of the fire.
After the flames were extinguished the structure was found to be significantly damaged, the spokeswoman said.
She also said it was too early to say what caused the fire.
A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is under way.
An ACT government spokeswoman has said the building damaged by the fire was not of heritage status.
"The building damaged by the fire on Friday, October 11 is not part of the Lanyon Homestead Precinct heritage listing," she said.
Forensic officers were called to the Lanyon Homestead precinct on Friday while emergency services personnel were still at the location late on Friday afternoon.
ACT police urged anyone who might have information about the fire to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, and quote reference number P2290867.
