Builders move in as well-know 'eyesore' landmark ripped down

A well-known landmark that has previously been dubbed an "eyesore" is being ripped down.

The three huge tanks on Limekiln Lane, in Wallasey, are currently being demolished. After builders moved in on the site, a number of people took to social media to question who owned the tanks and what will happen once they have been torn down.

Images and videos captured by the ECHO show an almost post-apocalyptic scene as a huge hole gapes open on one side of the tank. There was speculation the land would acquired by Peel Land & Property as part of the Wirral Waters project.

The project is one of the biggest housing schemes in the North West and is set to provide 13,500 homes and potentially create up to 20,000 jobs over the next 25 years. However, Peel told the ECHO the land - and the tanks - have nothing to do with them. Similiarly, Wirral Council confirmed they are not involved in the demolition works.

The tanks actually belongs to UM Terminals. The company offers multiple storage solutions, including heated and non-heated tanks, at their Birkenhead site. And the company has now offered an update on what is happening with the tanks.

A UM spokesperson told the ECHO: "UM has removed one tank and plans to take down two further smaller tanks which are out of service. The remainder of the site will continue to operate as normal storing bulk liquids for customers."
