Builder shares £2 hack that will reduce mould and keep your bathroom tiles white

A builder has shared his top tips to keep your home cleaner and mould-free.

As many people will know, mould can appear anywhere in your house, but it's often found in bathrooms due to it being warm, damp and humid.

If untreated, not only does it not look great but it can cause some serious health problems.

Welsh builder Paul Reid as shared his simple and cost-effective tips to avoid the problem, the Sun reports.

He said: “If your grout gets cracked, water can seep in and cause damage, leading to mould and damp.

"Replacing your grout or tiles can be an expensive job. Keeping your bathroom well-maintained is the best way to prevent mould from appearing.”

According to Checkatrade, the average cost of regrouting a bathroom is around £380, while tiling both floor and walls could mean a bill of more than £700.

Paul said scrubbing the mould with a baking soda paste when you notice it first appearing will help, but it will take some elbow grease.

Once you've mixed two parts of baking soda with water to make the paste, you should use a toothbrush to spread the mixture onto the grout and leave it to set for 20 minutes.

The building whizz this same product can be used to clean stains from carpets or get rid of smells from trainers.

Another possible solution includes using oxygen bleach.

A 500g tub can cost you around £10 but its one of the best to clean grout, according to the builder.

Paul said as a last resort chlorine bleach could also be used.

Another easy way to keep mould at bay on a budget is by getting into the habit of wiping surfaces down.

Because the bathroom is the most humid room in your house you need to remove excess moisture every time you take a bath or a shower.

Most people try to get around this by opening a window, but often excess moisture is left on tiles. Over time, this can cause mould in your grout.

Home owners are also advised to invest in a sealer and grout pen, which can cost round £7.

All you need to do is pump the pen until the ink can be seen on the nib, then draw between the tiles, covering the grout before letting it sit for two hours.

If the problems are still appearing, then Paul recommends re-grouting your tiles, but warns people to get proper help if they can't do it themselves.
