Budweiser releases 'all eyes on England' advert for World Cup - and doesn't mention Wales

Welsh football fans have criticised a beer giant for failing to acknowledge that Wales have made it to the World Cup in their recent advert on social media. On Tuesday, Budweiser UK promoted a short advert ahead of FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Twitter.

The eight-second clip showed the words: "Club allegiances to one side time to support our side". The latter two words were shown before an England football team shirt, suggesting that the beer company was backing England in their campaign to win the World Cup.

Alongside the video, Budweiser UK also tweeted: "Club football is on pause, now it's all eyes on England". But not everyone was happy about the digital campaign, with some Welsh fans pointing out that the company seemed to forget that the Cymru football team was also competing in the same tournament. One Twitter user also pointed out that Budweiser is actually brewed in Magor, Monmouthshire.

In response to the advert, Twitter user Matthew Phillips said: "Hello Budweiser. What about Wales? As, sadly, Wales is still in the UK? Should your Twitter handle be BudweiserEngland? Is there a Welsh Twitter page? Diolch".

Chris Stone wrote: "More than one UK team in the world cup", while Graham Maloney had this to say: "Oh dear! Very poor choice of beer and an even worse tweet! Club football is still going on and some of us will be watching FA Wales. Sadly it's all that will be offer in the Fan Zones in Doha too".

Tony Bailey said: "Don’t forget that women’s football is most definitely NOT on pause!!" Tony Sharpe responded with: "Cymru... I mean it is brewed in South Wales after all".

This comes as Cymru football team head off to Qatar on Tuesday, as they embark on an epic World Cup adventure. Rob Page's side held an open training session at Cardiff City Stadium as 2,000 school children cheer on their heroes for the final time before they travel to London and jet off on a seven-hour flight to Qatar.

Before they left the Vale Resort hotel, they were given a raucous send-off by Wales' rugby team in the foyer as the players formed a guard of honour, through which the football stars walked out of the hotel. You can read more about their send-off here. The men in red will take on the USA in their first match on Monday, November 21, with the full backing of three million people in this little corner of the world behind them.

WalesOnline has approached Budweiser Brewery Group UK&I for a comment. The brewery in Magor is said to be its largest in the UK and brews Bud, Bud Light as well as other beers in the same stable, Corona and Stella Artois.
