Buddies' goal hero is raring to go after stomach op

By KYLE GUNN

St Mirren striker Curtis Main has revealed he had a stomach operation in the summer as he looks to kick on this season.

The Englishman was at the double at the weekend against Dundee United as the Buddies ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Tannadice.

The two-goal performance matches his Premiership goal tally from last season and he is now looking forward to playing with nothing holding him back.

Main told Express Sport: “I feel like I’ve been working really hard over the summer since my operation.

“Performances like that are on the right road in terms of where I want to be as a player and what I want to show on a match day.

“I’m working in the right direction, but I’ve still got a bit to go.

“It was an issue with my stomach that needed to be resolved. That’s why surgeons get paid to do those things. I can’t disclose technical terms because it’s not my field, but I feel loads better this season.

“I don’t feel like there are any shackles on me and I feel like I can go and perform and play how I want to play.”

Main was delighted to get back on the scoresheet and with his own contribution, but he was quick to praise the structure and performance of the team.

New Zealand striker Alex Greive scored the third goal in stoppage time to round off the convincing victory away from home.

And Main reckons the togetherness and spirit the squad are currently showing starts with the manager Stephen Robinson.

The former Motherwell man continued: “It was a good performance overall.

“I thought we were solid from back to front and we felt fairly comfortable for the majority of the game.

“There were only a couple of spells where we maybe got opened up but, again, there was no panic.

“The team shape was excellent and everybody was comfortable in their roles and executed the game plan.”

“It shows that we all buy into what the manager wants in terms of setting up a structure and a unit and we’re all working together. If we do that, we’ll get results. It’s no good breaking away from that and deviating from our plan.

“If you come away to places like this, it’s going to be difficult if you start doing that.

“Everybody showed they were on hand with their task and from back to front I thought we were solid all the way through and really played well as a unit.”
