BTS walked away from the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with every trophy it was up for, even though none of its members was inside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27. The biggest of the three, Song of the Year for "SWIM," is the first the group has ever taken in that category.
The sweep gives the group's comeback album, ARIRANG, its most prominent American recognition roughly six months after release. It also lands as the seven members mark a return from a break in group work that stretched close to four years, according to The Korea Times.
A Song That Was Already Winning by Spring
"SWIM" is the lead single from ARIRANG, BTS's fifth studio album, which arrived in March. The Korea Times reports that the track opened at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue dated April 4, climbed as high as number two on the U.K. singles chart and held the top spot on Spotify's worldwide daily ranking for 25 days in a row, a run that began on March 20 and ended on April 13.
The competition was stiff. Forbes lists a Song of the Year field that also featured Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas," the "KPop Demon Hunters" anthem "Golden" by HUNTR/X, Olivia Dean's "Man I Need," the PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson collaboration "Stateside," the RAYE single "Where Is My Husband!" and "Bring Your Love," the duet from Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter.
A K-Pop Milestone, Though Not the Night's Final Prize
The Korea Herald counts Song of the Year among the ceremony's principal categories. Forbes calls the result a first for an Asian group at this show, while The Korea Herald frames it as the first time a K-pop group has won the category, five years after BTS became the first Korean act nominated for it with "Dynamite" in 2021.
Asian artists were not strangers to the podium. Rosé won last year alongside Bruno Mars for "APT.," which makes BTS the second Asian act to take the prize and means the trophy has now gone to K-pop two years in a row.
Best Group and Best K-Pop Extend the Records
Best Group is where BTS's history at this show runs deepest. The 2026 trophy is its fifth, following four consecutive wins between 2019 and 2022, and no act has more in that category.
In Best K-Pop, the rivals were LE SSERAFIM's "SPAGHETTI" (with BTS's own j-hope as a guest), Lisa's "Dream," KATSEYE's "Pinky Up," CORTIS's "REDRED" and BLACKPINK's "JUMP," according to The Korea Herald. Per Forbes, the victory is BTS's fourth in the category and gives it the record outright, after it had been level with Lisa on three.
The Catch: Nobody Saw It Live
Fans hoping for a televised acceptance speech were out of luck. Forbes reports that the ceremony hands out 23 awards but only six were presented on stage, leaving all three BTS trophies among the 17 given away outside the network broadcast on CBS and MTV. The group was also absent from the Los Angeles event.
In place of a speech, BTS answered through its agency, BigHit Music. In a statement the members thanked ARMY, their fan community, described ARIRANG as a fresh start, said that made the award more meaningful, and pledged to keep releasing music and performing together.
The group has stayed busy on other stages. It played the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on September 18, and its members performed at the halftime show of the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19.
Why the Timing Matters
Comeback albums after long breaks often lean on nostalgia. This one has collected its hardware on the strength of new music: chart-topping numbers in the spring, followed by a Song of the Year trophy in the fall. The Korea Herald notes that the wins arrive in the same year the seven members resumed full-group activities after finishing their military service.
Should "SWIM" keep its momentum through the rest of awards season, the group's return would rank among the strongest pop comebacks in recent memory.
