Bryn Terfel almost didn't make it to the coronation because he was stopped by police

Sir Bryn Terfel has revealed he got stopped by police on his way to Westminster Abbey to sing at the coronation service. A massive security operation was in place around Westminster ahead of Saturday's service and the Welsh baritone said he was a "tad late" and didn't make it in before some of the roads around Westminster were closed.

"I was lucky to make it into Westminster Abbey because I was stopped by police," he told reporters ahead of Sunday night's coronation concert in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

"I was a tad too late for the cordon and we were stopped and had to get representatives out of the abbey to come and help me. Once we were in, it was fine. There was obviously nervousness within the abbey but once it started everything fell into place."

The Gwynedd-born singer performed alongside the Choir of Westminster Abbey and had said he was looking forward to giving Wales "a platform". He performed 'Coronation Kyrie', which according to its Denbighshire composer Paul Maelor, is a "cry from the deep soul of the hills and valleys of Wales". Sir Bryn said: "It was a great honour to be singing at the coronation, and to sing in Welsh for the first time in such a service."

He also spoke about the honour of singing You'll Never Walk alone with fellow opera singer Andrea Bocelli at the coronation concert in Windsor Castle on Sunday night: "He (Andrea Bocelli) is such a wonderful human being and it was a pleasure to be on the stage at Windsor Castle. It is always good to put the Welsh against the Italians on such a stage."
