Bryan Robson sends Manchester United transfer message to Erik ten Hag

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has admitted that he would like to see Erik ten Hag add some physicality to his squad during this summer's transfer window.

United, who will discover their fixture list for next term's Premier League campaign on Thursday, are in the market for fresh blood this summer following a disastrous 2021/22 campaign. The club has confirmed that 11 players, including Paul Pogba and Juan Mata, will leave Old Trafford when their contracts expire at the end of this month, paving the way for new additions to be made.

Ten Hag, who has been prized away from Ajax to take charge at Old Trafford, is understood to be keen on bolstering several areas within the squad, including in central-midfield and up front. United are crying out for changes to be made in midfield and Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong has been installed as one of their leading targets.

Should United prize De Jong away from the Spanish giants, he would significantly strengthen the landscape of their midfield, but they would still be lacking a recognised defensive-midfielder. It is the one signing United must make this summer to make themselves stronger than last term.

And for former midfielder Robson, adding a physical presence to the squad would help Ten Hag. A defensive-midfielder, of course, is renowned for being physical and difficult to come against in and out of possession.

"It is going to be an interesting summer," Robson told World Football Index. "That is for sure. We've got a fair few players that are out-of-contract and leaving the football club this summer so they'll have to be replaced for starters.

"Erik will then want to start building his own squad. I am interested to see how he sets the team up, who he brings in and how we go next season.

"I think the club could do with a couple of more physical players this summer to boost the squad."

Immediately after the Eredivisie campaign had drawn to a close, Ten Hag packed his bags and arrived in Manchester. It quickly highlighted his commitment to his new job and that has impressed Robson.

"I am, and I think the players will be pleased about that as well," added Robson, when asked if he was encouraged by Ten Hag's decision to start work in M16 early. "I am sure that he'll have conversations with them as soon as possible to gauge how this season has gone and why it's gone that way.

"The players will also want to understand what he is about and what his plans are for the club during his time in charge. I wish him all the best and look forward to watching his Manchester United team next season as I am sure the fans are too."
