Brute banned from entering Bellshill after striking partner on face

A man who hit his partner has been banned from Bellshill and must tell social workers about any new relationship.

Alexander Flemming must comply with the strict conditions after a sheriff agreed to free him from prison.

Flemming, 24, admitted striking the woman on the face with a watch at a property in the town, on August 1 last year.

He also admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice by threatening her and trying to get her to retract her police statement.

Flemming, a joiner, of Five Ways Road, Netherburn, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said his client had been in custody awaiting the case since September. He was keen to get a community-based sentence and "turn his life around".

The lawyer added: "He would do whatever is required."

Mr Bruce pointed out that the victim had not suffered serious injury as a result of the assault.

Sheriff Thomas Millar read out a long list of conditions attached to a community payback order.

He told Flemming: "The assault was not overly serious, but the attempt to pervert the course of justice elevates this to another level.

"I have concerns over your record - there are previous convictions involving other partners."

Flemming will be supervised for two years and must attend addiction recovery services, if required, and a domestic abuse programme.

He is banned from entering Bellshill and a non-harassment order means he must not contact the female victim for three years.

The sheriff added: "You refer to trauma in your life.

"There are services that can assist. If there are further incidents of domestic violence custody is likely."
