Bruno Fernandes sends brilliant message to Luke Shaw after Manchester United beat Man City

Manchester United vice-captain Bruno Fernandes joked that Luke Shaw is like a new signing following his performance against Manchester City on Saturday.

United were unfortunate not to be in front at the interval having had the better chances against City. Fernandes went close to breaking the deadlock but dragged his shot wide of the goal.

At the interval, Pep Guardiola rallied his side and they took the lead on the hour mark. A close-range header from Jack Grealish gave David de Gea little chance of stopping the effort.

The Reds would be back level 18 minutes later when a through ball found the Portuguese international who finished calmly past Ederson. Despite appeals that Marcus Rashford had interfered with play from an offside position, the goal would end up being allowed by VAR.

Four minutes later, the Reds were in the lead. A cross from Alejandro Garnacho picked out Rashford in the centre who coolly finished.

Erik ten Hag's men were able to hold onto the advantage to ensure that they moved within a point of City in the Champions League places. Post-match, Shaw took to Instagram to celebrate victory over United's rivals.

Sharing a picture of the Reds celebrating the winning goal, Shaw wrote: "Derby day," accompanied with the heart eyes emoji. In response, United's first goalscorer of the afternoon took the chance to celebrate the Englishman's new position.

Fernandes replied: "What a centre-back we have signed in this transfer window," accompanied with the fire and laughing emojis. Of course, the 28-year-old was referencing Shaw's use as a centre-back in United's current system.

Ten Hag first introduced Shaw to that role following Lisandro Martinez's absence post-World Cup. However, his performances since then have been exceptional and he has now become a regular in the centre-back position.
