Bruno Fernandes responds to Man Utd fans after damning chants in Brighton horror show

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes tore into his team-mates after Saturday's humiliating defeat at the hands of Brighton.

The Red Devils were dismal and were beaten 4-0 on the south coast, with Fernandes admitting he and his teammates should be embarrassed. Former United transfer target Moises Caicedo opened the scoring after 25 minutes with a well-taken goal from the edge of the area before a quick-fire rout from Brighton in the second half put the game beyond doubt.

The result killed United's slim hopes of securing a top four finish, and means they're now at risk of being leapfrogged by sixth-place West Ham. "The result is what it is. It is not good enough," the midfielder told Sky Sports. "They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result.

"A little bit of everything [went wrong]. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now. It's something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better.

"I don't want to talk about the future, we have still one game this season and we have to win. I talked with the club about the future many times before I signed my contract because I think the future can be good, but obviously many things need to be fixed, as we have seen this season."

On the Red Devils' travelling fans chanting "you're not fit to wear the shirt" to their players: "I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it."

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick added after his penultimate game in charge: "It was a terrible performance. From the first until the last minute it was not enough; we can only apologise for this performance and a humiliating defeat. [Monday's 3-0 win over Brentford] was a different game, we just gave too much time and space.

Have your say! Who should Man Utd sell this summer? Let us know your prediction below.

"We were never in a position where we could stop them playing through our lines, We told the players be as compact as they could but we couldn't stop it. I don't think they ignored the gameplan but we weren't able to stop them. We gave them too much space and if you do that against a technically good team like Brighton, you will get punished."

On the other hand, it was a dream night for Brighton, with their second goalscorer, Marc Cucurella, saying: "It is unbelievable. We played really well and we are very happy because we work together, we lost six games in a row. This is a present for the fans and the team and the season.

"Coming here was difficult in the summer, a new league, new country and new language. It is now very exciting for me and my family; when we came, my son was 10 days old. He travelled with me when I changed my city. It is very special."
