Bruno Fernandes' message to Harry Maguire whilst "slapping his head" after Man Utd goal

Manchester United finally ended their long wait for a goal from a corner when Harry Maguire netted against Leeds United, and Bruno Fernandes had a message for the club captain after his effort.

More than a year had passed since United's last goal from a corner - also scored by Maguire, in a Premier League defeat to Sheffield United in January 2021 - but the captain's effort set Ralf Rangnick's side on their way to what would eventually be a 4-2 victory at Elland Road.

Fernandes was also on target in Sunday's victory, and the midfielder also laid on the second-half clincher for Anthony Elanga.

The Portugal international was among the first to congratulate Maguire after the opener, and he has now shed some more light on what he said after the goal.

Fernandes opened up on his celebration when he spoke to the media ahead of United's Champions League trip to face Atletico Madrid in their last-16 first-leg tie.

"I saw the goal of H [Maguire] and I see Paul [Pogba] running behind him, sliding on his knees, happy for him," Fernandes said.

"I was slapping his head, saying finally you've scored a goal with that big head."

The former Sporting CP man also responded to questions about the noise coming from United's dressing room amid a series of apparent media leaks.

"I think honestly, it's just people trying to complain," he said.

"We know when someone talks about this club, they go around the world with their voice and that's something they want. For us, it means nothing."

Fernandes had previously clarified his position on Maguire after a social media post in which he declared himself "very safe" between the Englishman's fellow centre-backs Raphael Varane and Eric Bailly.

"People want to complain and want to make stories around us, but the most important [thing] is that we stick together and do our jobs on the pitch," he said.

"Obviously, everyone is really happy with H because it’s really tough being in his place in the last period. Honestly, we all have bad games.

"And when we don’t win it’s not because H is not playing well, or Bruno is not playing well, it’s because the team is not playing well and it’s not performing in the right way.

"For us inside the dressing room is not where we blame someone, but [to] understand how we come out of bad situations."

United's victory at Leeds ensured they will kick off their next Premier League game in fourth place despite rivals Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves playing league games in midweek.

Rangnick's men will host Watford on Saturday with a chance to make up for the 4-1 defeat they suffered at Vicarage Road back in November in what proved to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's final game in charge.
