Bruno Fernandes breaks Manchester United silence on Cristiano Ronaldo's future

Bruno Fernandes has poured cold water on suggestions Cristiano Ronaldo might leave Manchester United during the summer transfer window and is adamant the situation will not change.

Having sealed a sensational return to Old Trafford 12 months ago, Ronaldo scored 24 goals in all competitions last season and was a shining light for United in an otherwise dismal campaign. Speculation over his future, meanwhile, started to spiral after the club alarmingly missed out on Champions League qualification.

Then came unfounded reports linking the five-time Ballon d'Or winner with a switch to Chelsea. However, rumours to that tune were negated by United and they insist Ronaldo will not be sold.

Bayern Munich distanced themselves from suggestions Ronaldo was being earmarked as a potential replacement for departing Poland captain Robert Lewandowski. Beyond that, a return to first club Sporting Lisbon was mooted, but the United stance outlined on Saturday night was conclusive.

Ronaldo and other United players involved during the June internationals have not yet returned to pre-season at Carrington, but they are due to do so next week before their tour to Thailand, Australia and Norway begins. That's when Fernandes and Ronaldo will be reunited.

As quoted by Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Fernandes said: "What I hope is that Cristiano will be there with me on Monday, that he's one of those who will come back later because of the Seleção's games and I'm not waiting for nothing more than that.

"As far as I know there is nothing more than that, but everyone knows their future. I don't believe the club is willing to lose a value like Cristiano."
