In a move that we did not see coming, former fourth round draft pick and kicker Cade York has returned to the Cleveland Browns on a futures deal as we enter the third week of NFL free agency.
York’s struggles in Cleveland are well-documented. After a rough rookie year, York then followed that up with an abysmal preseason campaign in year-two. This led to the Browns deciding to trade a seventh round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for veteran kicker Dustin Hopkins and to cutting York.
The kicker then went on to sign with the Tennessee Titans as a member of their practice squad. The New York Giants then signed him but did not attempt a field goal during the 2023 season.
The Browns love to keep a kicker on their practice squad and even wanted to bring York back on the practice squad a year ago. With the success of Hopkins from a year ago, there is no kicking competition, but York has a streamlined spot on the practice squad this season if he wants it.
