Brow expert urges people to follow crucial advice before committing to 'straight' trend

Eyebrow trends are as fickle as can be, changing constantly from the chunky Instagram carved brow to the high arch of the 1950s – with overplucking turning into a nightmare when full bushy brows come back into favour.

The shape of your eyebrows can totally transform your face, so when making any dramatic changes to them always consider how it can impact your eyes, nose and even lips in aligning your features.

Currently dominating the world of eyebrows is the angular straight brow, with 11.7 billion views on TikTok of people emulating the look which is said to suit everyone.

While it might be new to the world of TikTok, brow expert Fides Baldesberger says the straight brow is actually a common shape. She said: "Audrey Hepburn's signature eyebrow shape was a fluffy, thick brow with an elongated tail that would straighten her brow rather than arch it."

With Hepburn's seal of approval, jumping at the trend seems a no brainer but Fides, CEO of Rubis Tweezers, warned: "It's important to understand that brow hairs can take anywhere between two to six months to fully grow back. You should use a brow serum so that they can grow back healthy, even if you do like your new look.

"What you can do is draw with your brow pencil/pomade where you plan on cutting off the brow. Look properly at the brow shape you've drawn both close up and from further away and see if you still want to go through with it.

"You can also test it out a few times by using a spoolie with concealer to cover up the tails of your brows before fully committing to the look. You can also do this instead of shaving your tails, and instead use brow gel to lift your brow hairs up and then conceal the tails rather than shaving."

Like trying on clothes, test run your new brow shape before committing to six months of regrowth with a shape you don't like.

That being said, Fides believes the straight brow might actually be counteracting overgrown eyebrow tails. She said: "It might give people flashbacks of 90s over plucked brows, but for many face shapes this straight brow can suit them really well.

"For those with round, oval, or heart face shapes this brow style can balance features. In many cases, people can let their brow tails overgrow, which leads to a downturned eye look that overpowers the face and creates an imbalance to features.

"Shaving the tails even a bit, or totally off like these TikTok videos can bring back balance to the face. This is what people might be seeing as their face being lifted from the lack of a brow tail, but it's really just their eyes having more balance and space to show off their shape."

Straight brows can life your features but the base brow needs to be lifting too, such as with model Bella Hadid who has a tendency to sport straight brows. Her natural brow bone is below her eyebrow to give a lifted look, with or without a tail.

The trick here is knowing when to stop as you don't want to end up looking like Star Trek's Spock. Fides recommends only plucking or shaving the part of your eyebrow tail that turns down - leave the main brow alone.

Hold the skin taut as you remove little bits at a time, making sure to check each side is even. The expert suggests to "step away from the close-up mirror and have a look at your brows from a far" to help make sure you don't over pluck.

Using pointer tweezer will help select hairs carefully and with control, as Fides remarked: "Knowing when to stop is key for this look."
