Brother of Sandra Boyd weeps and tells family 'I'm sorry' after being charged in connection to fatal shooting

The brother of Sandra Boyd wept and told his family "I'm sorry" after he was charged in connection to her fatal shooting.

Derek Boyd was before Dublin District Court which heard that he faces two charges which relate to a "terrible accident" and "heartbreaking tragedy."

Mum-of-five Sandra, 36, died in the Mater Hospital after she was shot at a house in Collins Place, Finglas, west Dublin on Saturday night.

Mr Boyd was charged with unlawful possession or control of a Kahr CW9 semi automatic pistol.

The 27-year-old, also of Collins Place in Finglas, was also further charged with possession or control of five live rounds of 9mm luger ammunition.

The court heard evidence of arrest, caution and charge from Sergeant Damien Mangan of Finglas station.

The garda said he arrested Mr Boyd today at 1.30pm for the purpose of charge.

The accused did not reply after he was charged with the firearm offence, but did say "no comment" when hit with the ammunition rap.

Morgan Shelley, acting on behalf of Mr Boyd and his family's solicitor Phelim O'Neill, said they were making no application for bail.

Mr Shelley said he does not anticipate any application for bail in this case. In an emotional hearing, he said Mr Boyd's family were present in court to support the accused.

Mr Shelley explained that these were two firearms charges that relate to a "terrible accident" and "heartbreaking tragedy."

He applied for legal aid because of the seriousness of the charges, which judge Paula Murphy granted.

Mr Boyd, dressed in a navy and black Northface tracksuit and navy runners, sobbed throughout the short hearing and made eye contact with his heartbroken family members but did not address the court.

Mr Boyd was remanded in custody and is to appear at Cloverhill District court via video link next Wednesday.

Following the conclusion of the hearing, gardai and prison officers allowed Mr Boyd out of the dock for a brief moment as he hugged his family members.

Crying, he said: "I'm sorry." One family member replied: "We love you."

Mr Boyd was in garda custody since his arrest on Monday before he was charged yesterday and appeared in court.

Sandra was a mother to four boys and an 18-month-old baby girl.

Her partner Darren Noonan this week revealed his heartbreak earlier this week and said: "There is no one in this world like her. Love her so so much."
