Broncos vs. Lions: 5 things to know for Saturday’s game

Ahead of the Denver Broncos’ game against the Detroit Lions, we asked Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire five questions about Detroit and Saturday’s showdown with the Broncos. Check out our questions and Risdon’s answers below.

1
How concerned are you about the state of the Lions after Sunday's disappointing loss?

(Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports)

It’s definitely discouraging and that’s primarily because the players didn’t execute well. Jared Goff wasn’t sharp. The banged-up offensive line (other than Penei Sewell) was rough. The secondary got smoked with missed assignments and poor communication. The pass rush created a lot of pressure but couldn’t finish — so many missed tackle opportunities. It’s one thing to lose; it’s another to play poorly and uninspired and that’s what we saw in Chicago.

2
How has ex-Bronco Graham Glasgow looked since returning to Detroit?

(David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports)

Glasgow is healthy again and that has helped him become a good starting right guard. When he’s had to play center for Frank Ragnow, like he did in Week 14, Glasgow is nothing more than functional in the pivot. Ragnow is trending back towards playing vs. Denver and that would help Glasgow get settled back in his comfort zone.

3
Do the Lions have any notable weaknesses that Denver might be able to exploit?

(Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports)

The deep outside throws are there for the taking. Cornerback Jerry Jacobs is plucky but error-prone, and lately, the safety help has only helped the offense score quicker. The Lions tried Kindle Vildor in his place for a bit, and he’s pretty much the only depth the Lions have at outside CB.

Detroit also has a field goal problem. Kicker Riley Patterson is fine from inside about 48 yards, but that’s the range. It helps feed into why Dan Campbell opts to go for it on fourth downs so much. If the defense can get stops on third down, they’ll have chances to make big plays on fourth downs. Then again, Detroit is pretty good at them…

4
Name an underrated Detroit player that Broncos fans should be aware of this week

(Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports)

Sam LaPorta probably doesn’t qualify anymore, not after his epic, record-setting start to a rookie season for a tight end. Broncos fans certainly need to know LaPorta.

Beyond LaPorta, wideout Josh Reynolds is something of a go-to receiver when Jared Goff really needs a completion. Reynolds is also good in the red zone.

5
What's your prediction for Saturday -- who wins and why?

(Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports)

The Lions have been resilient in coming off losses. They match up well with the run offense against Dnver’s run defense, and I think OC Ben Johnson will bounce back after a brutal game script. First team to 27 wins! Lions 33, Broncos 27.
