In his first 2022 NFL mock draft, NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah has the Denver Broncos selecting Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with the ninth overall pick in the first round.
Here is Jeremiah’s commentary for the pick:
I’m sure the Broncos will pursue a trade for a premier quarterback (Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson) this offseason, but if they are unable to land one, Pickett is the best option in this draft class. He is ready to play right away. The Pitt product doesn’t have a huge arm, but he can make all the throws and he’s proven he can create when the pocket breaks down.
The Broncos also owned the ninth overall pick in last year’s NFL draft and general manager George Paton passed on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields to select Bama cornerback Pat Surtain in the first round.
Given that his year’s QB class isn’t strong, Denver might pass on QBs again in the draft, opting to instead trade for an established veteran. If the Broncos do draft a QB, though, Pickett will arguably be the top candidate.
