In his way-too-early 2024 NFL mock draft, Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire has the Denver Broncos landing the top quarterback prospect in next year’s class.
Popejoy has USC’s Caleb Williams falling to Denver at No. 5 overall behind Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt (Chicago Bears), Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (Houston Texans), Penn State tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu (Arizona Cardinals) and Ohio State defensive lineman Michael Hall (Indianapolis Colts).
While Broncos fans would undoubtedly be thrilled to land Williams in 2024, the QB falling to fifth overall seems highly unlikely. If there’s not a QB-needy team that holds the first overall pick, another team will likely trade up to No. 1 overall to make sure they land Williams in 2024.
Denver holding the fifth overall pick would also be a sign that the first season under Sean Payton did not go well. Another poor season from Russell Wilson would likely mean moving on to another QB in 2024, but it’s hard to imagine the Broncos landing Williams without having to first make a trade.
