Broncos beat Chiefs for first time since 2015, snap 16-game losing streak to KC

The streak is over!

After losing their last 16 games against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos snapped that losing streak with a 24-9 win over their division rival at home in Week 8.

Denver had a perfect start to the game. After the defense forced the Chiefs into a 3-and-out, rookie receiver Marvin Mims returned a punt 31 yards to Kansas City’s 39-yard line. After driving down to the four-yard line, Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson connected with running back Javonte Williams on a screen pass that went four a touchdown to make it 7-0.

The Chiefs then went 71 yards before settling for a field goal to make it 7-3 late in the first quarter. After the Broncos punted on their ensuing drive, Kansas City gave the ball back after linebacker Josey Jewell forced a fumble that safety Justin Simmons recovered for a turnover.

After getting the ball back, Wilson threw a 39-yard pass to receiver Jerry Jeudy that got the ball down to the 11-yard line. Wilson then connected with Jeudy again for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-3.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian on KC’s next drive, giving Denver the ball back near midfield. The Broncos failed to capitalize, turning the ball over on downs after Wilson failed to pick up a first down on 4th-and-2.

After that, the Chiefs went 44 yards before stalling in the red zone again and settling for a field goal to make it 14-6 with 5:39 remaining in the second quarter. After a Denver punt, Kansas City drove down to the 19-yard line before Mahomes was strip-sacked by Baron Browning.

Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper recovered the fumble, preventing the Chiefs from scoring before halftime. Denver also failed to capitalize on that turnover as Wilson was strip-sacked near midfield and KC recovered the ball. The Chiefs then kicked a field goal to make it 14-9 at halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless after KC blocked a Broncos field goal attempt. In the fourth quarter, Denver rookie linebacker Drew Sanders recovered a muffed Chiefs punt return to give the Broncos the ball at KC’s nine-yard line. Wilson then threw a touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton to increase the lead to 21-9.

The Chiefs turned the ball over on downs on their ensuring drive and after a Denver punt, Mahomes threw an interception to safety Justin Simmons. That turnover ultimately sealed a win as the Broncos added a field goal to make it 24-9 late in the game.

Up next for the Broncos is their bye in Week 9. After the bye, Denver will go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.
