Broncos agree to 2-year contract with LB Josey Jewell

The Denver Broncos have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with inside linebacker Josey Jewell, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported on Tuesday.

Jewell (6-2, 236 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Iowa. He began his career as a backup inside linebacker, playing primarily on special teams.

Jewell did start in nine games as a rookie as an injury fill-in, but he only started three games in 2019 when Denver’s first-choice LBs were mostly healthy. Jewell then emerged as a full-time starter in 2020, recording 113 tackles, five quarterback hits, four pass breakups and two sacks in 16 starts.

Jewell was set to be a key starter last year as well before a torn pectoral injury ended his season just two games into the 2021 season. That injury might have lowered Jewell’s market value this offseason.

In 49 career games (30 starts), the 27-year-old linebacker has totaled 217 tackles, seven QB hits, eight pass breakups and 3.5 sacks.
