British widow shot dead in home as Spanish police launch manhunt for killer

An 80-year-old British widow has been found head at her home in Spain after neighbours reported hearing gunshots. The pensioner's body was discovered at her property in Elche, near Alicante, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to local police reports she had been shot three times at close range at the rural property near Elche-Alicante Airport. Officials in Spain are trying to contact relatives before releasing more information, reports the Olive Press.

It is understood the alarm was raised when the woman failed to answer the door to a plumber she had booked to visit her home in the Torre Azul area.

More than 300,000 British expats live in Spain with many settled in the region close to Alicante. The city is one of the most popular Spanish locations for UK residents. It attracts many expatriates, especially retirees, for its pleasant climate and environment, vibrant nightlife and other facilities.
