British tourist dies after falling unwell at beach in Portugal

A British tourist has died after feeling 'unwell' following a swim at a beach in Portugal. The man is said to have started to feel poorly post-swim before he suffered a cardiac arrest, reports the Mirror.

Fellow beach-goers and life guards banded together to try and save the 55-year-old, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene. Calls were made to emergency services last week after the unnamed Brit collapsed in in Praia dos Alemães in Albufeira.

Police, ambulance and firefighters all raced to the popular beach, with the National Maritime Authority stating the initial alert was made at 1:34pm on Thursday afternoon. Multiple resuscitation attempts were made but unfortunately they could not revive the patient.

After he was declared dead, the man's body was taken to the Legal Medical Office of Portimão by firefighters who attended the scene.

In a statement, the authority said: "Following an alert received at 1:34 pm, through the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, informing that there was a person in cardiorespiratory arrest on Alemães beach, elements of the Maritime Police Station of Albufeira were activated, as well as elements of the Fire Department.

"Volunteers from Albufeira and a Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER).

"Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the victim, a 55-year-old man of British nationality, was being assisted by lifeguards on the beach, with the support of people who were nearby, until arrival of INEM elements who initiated resuscitation manoeuvres to the victim.

"After several attempts at resuscitation, it was not possible to reverse the situation, and the death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor.

"The body was later transported by the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira to the Legal Medical Office of Portimão, following indications from the Public Ministry.

"The Albufeira Maritime Police Post took care of the incident."
