British pensioner found alive in Tenerife ravine 30 hours after vanishing on solo hike

Susan Hornby (pictured), 76, had gone 'off on a walk on her own' while on holiday with her husband Peter - (Facebook)

A British pensioner has been rescued from a Tenerife ravine more than a day after disappearing during a lone hiking expedition.

Susan Hornby, 76, had set off by herself for a walk while holidaying with her husband Peter on the Spanish island.

Relatives sounded the alarm after she stopped responding to their messages and couldn't be tracked because she hadn't activated 'Find my iPhone' on her device.

The Dorset woman was discovered today suffering from dehydration and fearing the worst, The Sun reports.

Emergency services airlifted her to hospital where medics provided urgent treatment.

Louise Bakewell, a family friend, had posted an appeal online after growing worried when the pensioner hadn't been heard from since the early morning - despite embarking on what should have been a three-hour walk.

Ms Bakewell wrote: "My sister-in-law's mother, Susan Hornby, aged 76, has gone missing after a walk on her own.

"She was wearing a red coat and a white hat.

"We have contacted the police but the language barrier is difficult."

Ms Bakewell later shared the relief of Ms Hornby's discovery.

She wrote on Facebook: "She was found in a ravine and has been airlifted to hospital.

"Thank you for your help and service. What a wonderful group of people—my faith in humanity has been well and truly restored."

Explaining what happened, Ms Bakewell added: "Just to clarify – she went off on a walk alone and then became unwell. She did have Find My iPhone enabled on her phone. Please tell your friends and relatives to always enable this if they can, just to be safe."

Ms Hornby is believed to have been trekking close to Benijo Beach within Tenerife's Anaga Rural Park - famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, fierce waves and spectacular sunsets.

Last September saw another elderly British holidaymaker go missing - vanishing for almost two days after a night out on the Costa del Sol.

Clifford Wildgoose, 76, had last been seen at Patrick's 19th Hole Bar in Puerto Banus.

Thankfully, an American tourist spotted him and contacted his daughter, Melanie Hall.

Ms Hall said at the time: "To say I'm delighted is an understatement.

"I got straight on the phone to police and they went to pick him up and have taken him to hospital."

She had previously described being "beside herself with worry" following Mr Wildgoose's disappearance.
