This attack marks the latest incident in a series of assaults targeting vessels in the region. Promptly responding to a distress call from the burning tanker, a United States warship and other vessels rushed to aid. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far.
The responsibility for the strike has been claimed by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. They assert that this action is in support of the Palestinian people. Additionally, Houthi-run media has reported that two airstrikes occurred on the western coast of Yemen near Al Hudaydah just a few hours prior. Coincidentally, shortly before these strikes, the United States announced the destruction of a Houthi anti-ship missile that had been targeted towards the Red Sea and prepared for launch.
