British Gas customers will be paid to avoid energy-guzzling appliances this Sunday as part of a new trial.
Customers will be charged half price for electricity between 11am and 4pm this Sunday (April 30) with the money saved issued back as bill credit.
The idea is to encourage people to avoid power-heavy appliances - such as ovens, washing machines and dishwashers - during peak weekday evenings.
How much you could get back from British Gas depends on how much energy you use between 11am and 4pm.
The bill credit will be applied to your account within seven days.
British Gas is inviting 150,000 members of its PeakSave scheme to take part in the one-off trial.
Customers will be contacted by email and will have to opt-in to take part - you won't be added to the scheme automatically.
A British Gas spokesperson said: “Over 200,000 customers signed up to the first PeakSave trial, providing us with invaluable insights on how we can manage consumption to support a greener grid, while also helping our customers to make significant savings.
“Following the success of the scheme this winter, we are now the first supplier looking at other ways we can help manage demand.
“We will be contacting customers to let them know they have the option to get half price electricity from 11am to 4pm this Sunday and will soon be taking registrations to sign up more customers to upcoming trials.”
PeakSave was part of the wider National Grid ESO trials that took place this winter, which saw households rewarded for reducing their energy during "turn-down" events.
The initial scheme trial ran between December 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
British Gas says its customers received a combined total of more than £1.8million and saved 147 MWh of energy – enough to power 750,000 homes for an hour.
This amounts to an average of £28.56 per customer – with the top 2% saving £53 and the biggest saver making £332.
British Gas - which serves around 10 million households across the UK - says customers can register to take part in PeakSave here.
